David Beckstoffer grew up in Napa Valley and has spent the last 17 years helping his father run the Beckstoffer family vineyard business, which counts the venerated To Kalon Vineyard among its holdings. David is deeply connected to this place and has made the land his life’s work. The wine that flows from his connection is unique.

David has been waiting many years for the ideal vineyard to launch his own label. He finally found it in the legendary Beckstoffer Bourn Vineyard in St. Helena, originally purchased by the “last Bonanza king of the California Gold Rush,” William Bourn II, and still mostly in the hands of his descendents. David calls it “one of the best pieces of Cabernet ground in Napa Valley.” When, in 2010, Beckstoffer Vineyards was able to buy 13.25 acres of it from one of Bourn's great-grandsons, David knew he had premium land to work with. The vineyard is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as Petite Sirah, which remains integral to the blend.

In the martial arts, kata, or form, is achieved through rigorously ordered practice. As a black belt in karate, David understands the importance of mastering form. Kata also refers more broadly to any kind of devoted repetition or routine that, over time, makes a task or action second nature. Kata begets a level of expertise that allows us to do something artfully just by thinking it.

David’s day-to-day practice of stewarding the Beckstoffer properties has made him a master of reading vineyards and releasing their potential. Kata is a classic Bordeaux-style wine with excellent structure. Rising star and Bordeaux native Benoit Touquette brings a sensitivity to winemaking that is very much aligned with David’s desire to produce a subtle, nuanced wine.

The highly anticipated inaugural release of Kata Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2011, is slated for January 2014. E-Cep will be offering 2012 vintage bonds in spring 2014.
