Greg and Carol Lindstrom have spent a decade bringing their dream of crafting a world-class Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon to fruition. Their four-acre Nicali Vineyard, named for their two daughters Nicole and Ali, is a meticulously cultivated labor of love. When the Lindstroms first discovered their idyllic Stags Leap property, surrounded by the revered vineyards of Stag's Leap Wine Cellars, Shafer Vineyards and Joseph Phelps Vineyards, the site was unplanted due to its steep hillsides and complex topography. But the family believed that, approached with patience and artistry, the land could produce Cabernet of rare depth and quality.

Nicali Vineyard is now a tapestry of eleven gem-sized vineyard blocks, each planted with clone and rootstock selected with an eye toward soil type and sun exposure. Its rugged topography makes for complex flavor. The grapes from the narrow ridge line derive their elegance from the cool morning sun, while those on the west-facing lower sloping hillsides develop more robust flavors. And the volcanic rock of the bordering Mayacamas Mountain Range makes for warm days bracketed by cool mornings and evenings, providing a perfect balance of sugar and acidity.

Renowned winemaker Celia Welch, who has long experience in Stags Leap, joined the Lindstroms in 2005. She remembers watching the planting of the vineyard with great interest, amazed that the Lindstroms would attempt to grow vines on such challenging terrain. “It showed a real commitment. That kind of passion and that clear sense of mission, combined with a great site, is what makes an exceptional wine.”
